The Kerem Tunnel, the first bicycle tunnel in Israel, has been inaugurated in the Jerusalem Ring Path, a 42-kilometer cycle path that runs around Jerusalem, Israel’s capital city.

The 2.1-kilometers-long tunnel project was inaugurated during a celebration on Thursday , attended by Jerusalem and Heritage Minister Ze’evElkin, Mayor Moshe Lion, Gihon water company chairman Avi Baleshnikov and hundreds of cyclists.
Jerusalem was a desirable tourist destination because of its rich and fascinating history. Elkin added that in addition to its rich history, modern tourism is also integrated into the city of Jerusalem. “The launch of the tunnel is an additional aspect of the growth of Jerusalem as well as its transformation to an attractive tourist destination for everyone throughout Israel and the world.
Elkin his ministry, which together with the Jerusalem Municipality spearheaded the project, explained that the ministry “invests hundreds of millions of shekels every year in the improvement of the tourism industry in Jerusalem and in the creation of exciting activities and ventures that connect the rich history of our capital city to the future of Jerusalem… I encourage cyclists to take advantage of a a well-maintained, modern cycle route, which overlooks the stunning landscape of Old Jerusalem.

Elkin explained that the Kerem Tunnel project is an essential tool for achieving the idea to change the way of thinking and transport throughout Jerusalem. “The tunnel, which will connect with the Jerusalem Ring Path, will join the existing cycle paths within the city, and will be constructed within the diverse neighborhoods. It’s designed to encourage cycling among its residents, and also to encourage an environmentally sustainable transportation system in Jerusalem.”
The Kerem Tunnel was first excavated in the late 1990s to relocate the main sewer line of the Gihon Corporation toward the purification plant in Sorek, which is located just west of the city. Construction of roads installation, blowers, modern safety systems and electrical wiring are all part of the present works. The tunnel will be safe for public to use throughout the entire year.
The Kerem Tunnel allows for access to unique recreation areas, like Ein Kerem, a neighborhood which has a Biblical zoo and aquarium and ancient natural springs Ein Haniyeh and Ein Laban.
