נווה פריצקי The Kerem Tunnel, Israel’s newest bicycle tunnel, has been opened as part a 42-kilometer cycle route that runs through the capital.

נווה פריצקי The tunnel links Nahal Refaim with Emek Motza. Its southern entrance is located in Refaim Park, below Ein Laban, and the northern entrance is in Nahal Ein Kerem, about half a mile close to the Kerem junction.

The 2.1-kilometer long tunnel was officially opened on Thursday, by Jerusalem and heritage minister Ze’evElkin and Mayor Moshe Lion. Avi Baleshnikov of Gihon, chairman of Gihon and a plethora of other cyclists were also present.

Jerusalem was once a popular tourist destination because of its historic past. Elkin stated that, in addition to its historical treasures the modern tourist industry is included in the Jerusalem city. “The inauguration[of] the tunnel is an additional aspect of the development Jerusalem and its transformation into a desirable tourist destination for all types in Israel and around the world.

Elkin who, through his ministry and the Jerusalem Municipality led the project, stated that his ministry “invests hundreds to millions of shekels each year to develop all aspects of Jerusalem’s tourists and in the creation and operation of new attractions, ventures , and other attractions which connect the rich past of Jerusalem’s eternal city to its future”. https:/ The project was financed by the Elkin’s department as well as the Tourism Ministry. It also included the budgets for the Jerusalem Municipality and the Gihon Corporation. The project was completed by the Jerusalem Development Authority.

Elkin stated that the Kerem Tunnel project is an essential tool for achieving the goal to transform the idea of transport throughout Jerusalem. “The tunnel, which connects with the Jerusalem Ring Path, will join the existing cycle paths within the city, and are being constructed in its different areas. It is designed to encourage cycling within its inhabitants, and promote an environmentally sustainable transportation system in Jerusalem.” The Kerem Tunnel was originally excavated in 1990 to move the main sewers of Gihon Corporation towards the Sorek purification facility. This plant is located west of Sorek and is still used as an infrastructure tunnel.

The work currently in progress includes road construction, the installation of blowers, as well as advanced safety and electrical systems in order to ensure that the tunnel is secure for the public to pass through all year round. The Kerem Tunnel allows for access to unique recreational areas, like Ein Kerem, a neighborhood which has a Biblical aquarium and zoo, and historical natural springs Ein Haniyeh and Ein Laban.
