The Kerem Tunnel provides a unique adventure in hiking and riding that is to be enjoyed by all.
The Kerem Tunnel, the first bicycle tunnel in Israel was opened in the Jerusalem Ring Path, a 42-kilometer cycle route that circles Jerusalem, the capital city.
It links Nahal Refaim to Emek Motza. Its southern entrance is within Refaim Park under Ein Laban. The northern entry, Nahal Ein Kerem, is about half a kilometer away from the Kerem junction.
The 2.1-kilometer-long tunnel was officially opened by Jerusalem’s Heritage Minister Zeev Elkin. The ceremony was also attended by Mayor Moshelion, Avi Balehnikov, Gihon Water Company chairman, as well as many cyclists.
The city’s rich history was a reason for it to be the most visited tourist attraction in the past. Elkin declared that, in the present, apart from its historical treasures it also incorporates modern tourists. “The inauguration (of the tunnel) is another aspect of the expansion of Jerusalem and its transformation into a desirable tourist destination for all kinds of audiences across Israel and around the world.”
Elkin, who heads the project along with Jerusalem Municipality said that his ministry invests hundreds of millions in the development of Jerusalem’s tourism and the development of innovative tourist attractions and ventures that connect the glory historical past of Jerusalem to its future. The Kerem Tunnel first was excavated in the 90s to move a main sewer line for the Gihon Corporation towards Sorek. It is currently used as an infrastructure tunnel that includes the fifth waterline to Jerusalem via the Mekorot water corporation.

The Kerem Tunnel provides access to unique recreation locations, including Ein Kerem neighbourhood, the biblical aquarium and zoo as also the historical natural springs Ein Haniyeh, Ein Laban and Ein Haniyeh.
