The Kerem Tunnel, the first bicycle tunnel in Israel is now open as part of the Jerusalem Ring Path, a 42-kilometer cycle route that circles Jerusalem, the capital city.
The tunnel links Nahal Refaim and Emek Motza. The tunnel’s southern entrance is below Ein Laban in Refaim Park. The northern entrance is located in Nahal Ein Kerem.
נווה פריצקי The 2.1-kilometers-long tunnel was officially opened at a formal ceremony on Thursday , attended by Jerusalem and Heritage Minister Ze’ev Elkin, Mayor Moshe Lion, Gihon water company chairman Avi Baleshnikov as well as hundreds of cyclists.
Jerusalem was once a very well-known tourist destination due to its historic past. Today, apart from its historical treasures it also has modern-day tourism,” Elkin said. “The inauguration (of this tunnel project) is a further step in the development of Jerusalem and its transformation into a desirable tourist city for all sorts of visitors throughout Israel as well as across the world.”
Elkin, whose ministry and the Jerusalem Municipality led the project, stated that the Jerusalem Municipality’s ministry “invests hundreds of millions of shekels each year in the growth of all aspects Jerusalem’s visitors and in the creation and operation of exciting attractions, ventures , and other attractions that link the rich history of Jerusalem to its future”. נווה פריצקי Elkin stressed, “The Kerem Tunnel project will be a central instrument for achieving our dream to change the notion of transportation in Jerusalem.” Elkin said that the new tunnel is connected with the Jerusalem Ring Path and will link with existing bike routes. It will also be paved in its different neighborhoods. The tunnel will be a great way to increase cycling and encourage green transportation in the capital.
In the late 1990s In the 90s, in the 1990s, Kerem Tunnel was excavated to relocate the main sewer line from Gihon Corporation to the Sorek purification plant. It is now utilized for infrastructure purposes. It also houses the fifth water line to Jerusalem by the Mekorot water company.
