https://notes.io/qdSy1 The Kerem Tunnel, Israel’s newest bicycle tunnel, has been opened as part the 42-kilometer cycle route which is a loop around the capital.
The tunnel is located through the Nahal-Refaim-Emek-Motza route. Its southern entry is located in Refaim Park under Ein Laban. The northern entry, Nahal Ein Kerem, is approximately half a mile away from the Kerem junction.
The 2.1-kilometers-long tunnel was officially opened at a formal ceremony held on Thursday that was attended by Jerusalem and Heritage Minister Ze’ev Elkin Mayor Moshe Lion, Gihon water company chairman Avi Baleshnikov and hundreds of cyclists.
“In the past, Jerusalem was an attractive city for tourists because of its rich history. Elkin explained that the modern tourist industry is a part of Jerusalem’s treasures from the past and incorporates modern day tourism. “The inauguration [of] this tunnel project is another step in the development of Jerusalem as an ideal tourism destination for all kinds of tourists from Israel as well as around the world.”
Elkin his ministry, which together with the Jerusalem Municipality spearheaded the project, stated that his ministry “invests hundreds of millions of shekels every year in the improvement of all aspects of Jerusalem’s tourism and in the creation of innovative tourist attractions and ventures that link the glorious historical past of our capital city to its future… I invite the cycling community to ride a secure and modern-day route that takes the cyclist through Old Jerusalem.

The work currently in progress includes road construction, the installation of blowers, as well as advanced safety and electrical systems to ensure the tunnel is safe for pedestrians to travel through all year round.
