As part of the 42-kilometer Jerusalem Ring Path cycling route that surrounds Jerusalem’s capital, the Kerem Tunnel was inaugurated.
The tunnel is located along the Nahal Refaim-Emek Mostza route. The southern entrance is located in Refaim Park, below Ein Laban while the northern entrance is located in Nahal Ein Kerem, about one kilometer away from the Kerem junction.
The 2.1-kilometers-long tunnel was officially opened during a celebration on Thursday , attended by Jerusalem and Heritage Minister Ze’ev Elkin, Mayor Moshe Lion, Gihon water company chairman Avi Baleshnikov and hundreds of cyclists.
“In the past, Jerusalem was an attractive tourist destination due to its rich past. Elkin said that today, apart from its rich history, Jerusalem is also home to modern-day travelers. “The opening (of this tunnel project) is an additional part of the growth of Jerusalem and the transformation of Jerusalem into a popular city to visit for all kinds of audiences across Israel and around the globe.”
Elkin who, along with the Jerusalem Municipality spearheaded the project, said the ministry “invests hundreds of millions of shekels every year in the development of Jerusalem’s tourism in all its aspects and also in the development of innovative activities and ventures that connect the fascinating history of our capital city’s eternal past to its future… I encourage all cyclists to visit and enjoy the new, well-maintained and modern route which overlooks Old Jerusalem.

The Kerem Tunnel was originally excavated in 1990 in order to transfer the main sewer of Gihon Corporation towards the Sorek purification facility. The plant is located west of Sorek and is currently used as an infrastructure tunnel.

Current works include road construction, installation blowers as well as advanced security systems to ensure the tunnel is secure for all to use all year.
