President Ivan Duque’s closing speech at Asofondos Congress Cartagena was not the one Duque had in mind. Instead of discussing pensions, Duque decided to discuss politics and the ways to do. He criticised Gustavo Petro for using his seat to criticize the army, and also criticized the fact his dual status as an elected congressman and a candidate.

He had not even started with greetings, when the member of the Chamber elected by Valle del Cauca of the Green Alliance party, Duvalier Sanchez, interrupted him to ask the representative what he planned to do following the comments of General Eduardo Zapateiro against the statements of presidential candidate Gustavo Petro.

“Article 219 prohibits military forces from taking sides, taking part in democratic debates, or participating in political discussions. The entire country is in chaos. Sanchez declared, “It’s a critical time the way General Zapateiro’s actions have been carried out,” as he held his phone in front of him and posted all of his Facebook posts.

The president responded forcefully to defend Zapateiro’s position in the midst of all the chaos and declared that if anyone has allegations against members of the public force the person should be brought to justice.

Petro’s double role today as a congressman, head of the Opposition and a Candidate was also criticized further by President Duque.

“Who is accusing you?” Who is the senator? “I resigned from Congress following my victory in the popular poll to be able to freely express my opinions freely as a candidate and not to use an uni-hat in order to make use of seats to attack, and then after institutions react by presenting me as a victim, because it isn’t democratic,” said the president.

Sanchez attempted to follow the controversy but the president was adamant and demanded that he follow the rules.

How did the fight between Petro Zapateiro and Petro Zapateiro get started?

Petro posted the following message on his social networks on April 20 2010. “While the soldiers are being killed by the Gulf Clan, some of generals are on the clan’s payroll. https://gemsfly.in/members/gustavo-petrowbjw077/activity/832378/ trafficking politicians are the ones who make it appear as if the clan’s leaders are deceived,” the presidential candidate wrote.

This Friday Zapateiro responded the same way. “Senator,” Zapateiro said in the same tone: “Senator,” don’t use your investiture (parliamentary immunity) to attempt to politicize the deaths of our soldiers. Instead, you should perform your civic duty of filing a legitimate complaint to the Prosecutor of the information you have mentioned, regardless of who is.”
