The Kerem Tunnel offers an unforgettable adventure on foot and in the saddle to the advantage of
The Kerem Tunnel, the first cycle tunnel in Israel was opened as part of the Jerusalem Ring Path, a 42-kilometer cycling route that surrounds Jerusalem, Israel’s capital city.

The tunnel is located through the Nahal-Refaim-Emek-Motza route. The southern entrance is within Refaim Park under Ein Laban. The northern entry, Nahal Ein Kerem, is about half a kilometer away from the Kerem junction.

On Thursday, Jerusalem and Heritage Minister Zeev Elkin, Mayor Michael, Avi Baleshnikov, Gihon chairman, and a slew of cyclists were present at a celebration to mark the opening of the tunnel’s 2.1-kilometer-long length.

Jerusalem’s rich past was the main reason that it was a popular tourist spot during the time of its glory. Elkin stated that, in addition to its historic treasures the modern tourist industry is incorporated into Jerusalem’s city. “The inauguration (of the tunnel) is an additional part of the growth of Jerusalem as well as its transformation into a desirable tourist destination for all kinds of people in Israel and around the world.”

Elkin his ministry, which together with the Jerusalem Municipality spearheaded the project, explained that the ministry “invests hundreds of millions of shekels every year to develop the tourism industry in Jerusalem and in the creation of new activities and ventures that connect the rich history of our eternal capital to its future… I invite you to ride your bicycles along a beautiful and well-maintained road that overlooks Old Jerusalem.

Elkin’s Ministry Tourism Ministry, Jerusalem Municipality and Gihon Corporation contributed approximately NIS 25,000,000 for the project. The project was executed by the Jerusalem Development Authority.

Elkin stressed, “The Kerem Tunnel project is a key instrument for realizing our vision to change the concept transportation throughout Jerusalem.” נווה פריצקי Elkin stated that the new tunnel is connected with the Jerusalem Ring Path and will join existing bike paths. The tunnel will also be made paved in its various areas. The tunnel will be a great way to encourage cycling and promote green transport in Jerusalem.

The Kerem Tunnel first was excavated in the late 90s to relocate the main sewer line of the Gihon Corporation towards Sorek. It is now being used as an infrastructure Tunnel that includes the fifth waterline that runs to Jerusalem from the Mekorot water corporation.
