The Kerem Tunnel is a great place to ride and hike.
The Kerem Tunnel is the first cycle tunnel to be constructed in Israel and was inaugurated as part of the Jerusalem Ring Path, a 42-kilometer cycle path that runs around Jerusalem, the capital city.

The tunnel connects the path between Nahal Refaim and Emek Motza. Its southern entry is located in Refaim Park under Ein Laban. The northern entry, Nahal Ein Kerem, is just half a kilometer away from the Nahal Ein Kerem junction.

The project was financed by the Elkin’s Ministry and the Tourism Ministry. It also included the budgets for the Jerusalem Municipality and the Gihon Corporation. The project was completed by the Jerusalem Development Authority.

Elkin stated that “The Kerem Tunnel Project is a central tool to realize the dream to transform the concept of transportation throughout Jerusalem.” Elkin said that the new tunnel will connect with the Jerusalem Ring Path and will connect with existing bike paths. It will also be paved throughout its various neighborhoods. This will help cyclists and promote green transportation in the capital.

The Kerem Tunnel first was excavated in the 90s to move the main sewer line of the Gihon Corporation towards Sorek. It is currently being used as an infrastructure tunnel that includes the fifth waterline to Jerusalem via the Mekorot water corporation.

The work currently in progress includes road construction, the installation of blowers as well as modern safety and electrical systems to ensure the tunnel is safe for people to walk through throughout the year.
