The Kerem Tunnel, the first bicycle tunnel in Israel, has been inaugurated in the Jerusalem Ring Path, a 42-kilometer cycle route that circles Jerusalem, the capital city.

The northern entry, Nahal Ein Kerem, is about half a kilometer away from the Nahal Ein Kerem junction.
The 2.1-kilometers-long tunnel project was officially inaugurated at a formal ceremony held on Thursday that was attended by Jerusalem and Heritage Minister Ze’ev Elkin, Mayor Moshe Lion, Gihon water company chairman Avi Baleshnikov, and a slew of cyclists.

Elkin, whose ministry together with the Jerusalem Municipality spearheaded the project, stated that his ministry “invests hundreds of millions of shekels each year in the development of Jerusalem’s tourism in all its aspects and in the creation of exciting attractions and ventures that connect the fascinating history of our eternal capital to the future of Jerusalem… I invite cycling enthusiasts to join us and take a ride along the modern and well-maintained cycle route that takes in the unique scenery of Old Jerusalem.”

Elkin declared that the Kerem Tunnel project was a crucial element in achieving the vision of changing the concept for transport throughout Jerusalem. Elkin explained that the proposed tunnel connects with the Jerusalem Ring Path and will link with existing bike routes. It will also be paved throughout its different neighborhoods. The tunnel will be a great way to increase cycling and encourage green transport in Jerusalem.
The Kerem Tunnel was first excavated in the late 1990s to relocate the main sewer line of the Gihon Corporation toward the purification plant in Sorek, which is located to the west of the city. It is currently being used as an infrastructure tunnel that also includes the fifth water line that connects to Jerusalem from the Mekorot water company.

The works currently underway include road construction, the installation of blowers, as well as advanced electrical and safety systems, to ensure the tunnel is safe for pedestrians to travel through all year round.
