The Kerem Tunnel, Israel’s first bike tunnel, opened as part of the Jerusalem Ring Path. This 42-kilometer cycle route is located around Jerusalem.

נווה פריצקי Inauguration of the tunnel which measures 2.1 kilometers long, was held in Jerusalem and the Heritage Minister Ze’ev Elkin Mayor Moshelion, Avi Baleshnikov (Gihon water company chairman of the company) along with hundreds of cyclists.

Today, apart from its historic treasures the city also offers modern tourism,” Elkin said. “The launch of the tunnel is an additional element of the progress of Jerusalem as well as its transformation to an attractive tourist destination for everyone throughout Israel and the world.
Elkin who, through his ministry and the Jerusalem Municipality led the project, said that the Jerusalem Municipality’s ministry “invests hundreds to millions of shekels each year to develop all aspects of Jerusalem’s tourists and in the development and operation of new tourist attractions, ventures, and activities which connect the rich past of Jerusalem’s eternal city to the future”. Elkin’s Ministerial, Tourism Ministry, Jerusalem Municipality and Gihon Corporation contributed approximately NIS 25 million for the project. Work was performed by the Jerusalem Development Authority.

The Kerem Tunnel first was excavated in the 90s to move the main sewer line of the Gihon Corporation towards Sorek. It is now being utilized as an infrastructure tunnel which also includes the fifth line of water that runs to Jerusalem from the Mekorot water corporation.

Current works include road construction, installation blowers and sophisticated security systems to ensure the tunnel is secure to use throughout the year.
