נווה פריצקי The Kerem Tunnel, Israel’s newest bicycle tunnel, has been inaugurated as part of the 42-kilometer cycle route which is a loop around the capital.
It connects Nahal Refaim to Emek Motza. Its southern entrance is in Refaim Park, below Ein Laban, and the northern entrance is in Nahal Ein Kerem, about half a mile close to the Kerem junction.
The 2.1-kilometer-long tunnel was officially inaugurated by Jerusalem’s Heritage Minister Zeev Elkin. The ceremony was also attended by Mayor Moshelion Avi Balehnikov, Gihon Water Company Chairman, as well as thousands of cyclists.

Elkin’s Ministry, Tourism Ministry, Jerusalem Municipality and Gihon Corporation contributed approximately NIS 25,000,000 for the project. Work was performed by the Jerusalem Development Authority.
Elkin stated, “The Kerem Tunnel project will be a central instrument in achieving our goal to change the way transportation is conducted in Jerusalem.” “The new tunnel, which is connected to the Jerusalem Ring Path, will connect with existing cycle paths within the city, as well as the ones that will be constructed within the different areas. The tunnel is intended to encourage bicycling within its inhabitants, and also to encourage an environmentally sustainable transportation system in Jerusalem.”
The Kerem Tunnel, originally excavated by the Gihon Corporation in the 1990s to relocate its main sewer line to Sorek’s purification plant.
