The Kerem Tunnel, Israel’s first bike tunnel, opened as part of the Jerusalem Ring Path. This 42-kilometer cycle route is located around Jerusalem.

The opening ceremony of the tunnel which measures 2.1 kilometers long took place in Jerusalem and Heritage Minister Ze’ev Elkin Mayor Moshelion, Heritage Minister Ze’ev Elkin Avi Baleshnikov (Gihon water company chairman) and hundreds more cyclists.
Jerusalem was once very sought-after tourist destination due to its historic past. Elkin said that apart from its historical treasures and modern amenities, tourism has also been integrated into the Jerusalem city. “The inauguration (of the tunnel) is an additional part of the growth of Jerusalem as well as the transformation of Jerusalem into a popular tourist city for all sorts of visitors in Israel and around the globe.”
Elkin the minister whose ministry as well as the Jerusalem Municipality led the project, stated that the Jerusalem Municipality’s ministry “invests hundreds of millions of shekels per year in the growth of all aspects Jerusalem’s tourists and in the creation and operation of innovative attractions, ventures and attractions that link the rich history of Jerusalem’s eternal city to the future”. The project was funded by Elkin’s ministry and the Tourism Ministry. It also included the budgets for the Jerusalem Municipality and the Gihon Corporation. The work was completed by the Jerusalem Development Authority.
