The Kerem Tunnel, Israel’s newest bicycle tunnel, has been opened as part the 42-kilometer cycle route which is a loop around the capital.
The tunnel connects Nahal Refaim and Emek Motza. נווה פריצקי The southern entrance of the tunnel is below Ein Laban in Refaim Park. The northern entrance is found in Nahal Ein Kerem.
The 2.1-kilometers-long tunnel project was inaugurated at a formal ceremony on Thursday , attended by Jerusalem and Heritage Minister Ze’ev Elkin, Mayor Moshe Lion, Gihon water company chairman Avi Baleshnikov, and a slew of cyclists.
Jerusalem was once a popular tourist attraction due to its rich history. Elkin said that, nowadays as well as its historic treasures the tunnel construction project encompasses modern day tourism. “The opening of this tunnel project is another part of the development of the city of Jerusalem as well as its development into a dazzling city that is attractive to all types of people throughout Israel and around the world.”

Elkin’s Ministry, the Tourism Ministry, Jerusalem Municipality and the Gihon Corporation all contributed to the project. The Jerusalem Development Authority completed the work.
Elkin declared that the Kerem Tunnel project was a key tool in realizing the dream of altering the way of transportation in Jerusalem. Elkin explained that the proposed tunnel connects to the Jerusalem Ring Path and will join existing bike routes. It will also be paved throughout its different areas. This will encourage cycling and promote green transport in Jerusalem.

The plant is located west of Sorek and is used today as an infrastructure tunnel.

The works currently underway include road construction, installation of blowers and advanced electrical and safety systems, to ensure the tunnel is safe for the public to pass through all year round.
