The Kerem Tunnel, the first cycle tunnel in Israel was opened as part of the Jerusalem Ring Path, a 42-kilometer cycle path that runs around Jerusalem, the capital city.

נווה פריצקי On Thursday, Jerusalem and Heritage Minister Zeev Elkin, Mayor Moshelion, Avi Baleshnikov, Gihon chairman and hundreds of cyclists participated in a ceremony to inaugurate the tunnel’s 2.1-kilometer-long length.
“In the past, Jerusalem was an attractive tourist city because of its rich history. Nowadays, aside from its historical treasures it also has modern tourism.” Elkin said. “The inauguration (of the tunnel) is an additional part of the growth of Jerusalem, and the transformation of Jerusalem into a popular tourist city for all sorts of people throughout Israel as well as around the globe.”
Elkin who’s ministry responsible for the project, along with Jerusalem Municipality stated that his ministry had invested thousands of shekels each year in the city’s tourism development and in the development of new ventures and attractions which will link the amazing historic past with the the future of Jerusalem. I would like to invite cyclists to join us and take a ride along the modern and well-maintained cycle route that offers a view of the unique scenery of Old Jerusalem.”
Elkin’s Ministerial, Tourism Ministry, Jerusalem Municipality and Gihon Corporation contributed approximately NIS 25 million for the project. Work was performed by the Jerusalem Development Authority.
Elkin stressed that “The Kerem Tunnel Project is an essential tool for achieving the dream to redefine the idea of transport in Jerusalem.” “The tunnel, which is connected to the Jerusalem Ring Path, will join the existing cycle paths in the city as well as the ones that will be paved within its various neighborhoods. It’s designed to encourage bicycle riding among its residents, and promote a green transportation revolution in Jerusalem.”
