The Kerem Tunnel, the first cycle tunnel in Israel is now open as part of the Jerusalem Ring Path, a 42-kilometer cycling route that surrounds the capital city.
The tunnel is located along the Nahal Refaim-Emek Mostza route. The southern entrance is located in Refaim Park, below Ein Laban and its northern entrance is in Nahal Ein Kerem, about one kilometer away from the Kerem junction.
נווה פריצקי The 2.1-kilometers-long tunnel project was officially inaugurated during a celebration on Thursday , attended by Jerusalem and Heritage Minister Ze’evElkin, Mayor Moshe Lion, Gihon water company chairman Avi Baleshnikov and hundreds of cyclists.
“In the past, Jerusalem was an attractive city for tourists due to its glorious past. Elkin who is in charge of the project in conjunction with Jerusalem Municipality said that his ministry invests millions of dollars in the city’s tourism growth and the development of innovative activities and ventures that tie the glorious past of Jerusalem to its future. I would like to invite cyclists to visit and enjoy the modern and well-maintained cycle route that overlooks the special scenery of Old Jerusalem.”

The Kerem Tunnel was first excavated in the 1990s to move the main sewer line from the Gihon Corporation toward the purification plant in Sorek It is situated west of the city and is currently being used as an infrastructure tunnel. It includes the fifth water line to Jerusalem of the Mekorot water company.

The work currently in progress includes road construction, installation of blowers and advanced electrical and safety systems, to ensure the tunnel is safe for pedestrians to travel through at all times of the year.
It is also possible to use the Kerem Tunnel to enjoy unique recreation areas, such as Ein Kerem, the Biblical Zoo, aquarium, and the Ein Kerem neighborhood.
