נווה פריצקי The Kerem Tunnel, Israel’s first bicycle tunnel, was opened as part of Jerusalem Ring Path. This 42-kilometer cycling route surrounds Jerusalem.

It connects Nahal Refaim to Emek Motza. Its southern entrance is in Refaim Park under Ein Laban. The northern entry, Nahal Ein Kerem, is approximately half a mile away from the Kerem junction.

The 2.1-kilometers-long tunnel project was inaugurated during a celebration on Thursday , attended by Jerusalem and Heritage Minister Ze’evElkin, Mayor Moshe Lion, Gihon water company chairman Avi Baleshnikov as well as hundreds of cyclists.

Elkin’s Ministry, Tourism Ministry, Jerusalem Municipality and Gihon Corporation contributed approximately NIS 25,000,000 for the project. Work was performed by the Jerusalem Development Authority.

Elkin said that the Kerem Tunnel project was a crucial element in achieving the vision of changing the concept for transport throughout Jerusalem. “The new tunnel, which is connected to the lengthy Jerusalem Ring Path, will connect the existing bike routes in the city as well as the ones that will be laid in its various neighborhoods, to encourage cycling among its residents and its visitors, and also encouraging the green transportation revolution in the capital city.”

In the 1990s In the 90s, the Kerem Tunnel was excavated to move the main sewer line from Gihon Corporation to the Sorek purification plant. It is now used for infrastructure purposes and also houses the fifth water line to Jerusalem by the Mekorot water company.

The current works include road construction, the installation of blowers and advanced electrical and safety systems, to make the tunnel safe for the public to pass through at all times of the year.
