The 2.1-kilometers-long tunnel project was officially inaugurated in a ceremony on Thursday , attended by Jerusalem and Heritage Minister Ze’ev Elkin Mayor Moshe Lion, Gihon water company chairman Avi Baleshnikov, and a slew of cyclists.

Elkin’s Ministry, the Tourism Ministry, Jerusalem Municipality as well as the Gihon Corporation all contributed to the project. The Jerusalem Development Authority completed the project.

It’s designed to promote biking within the city’s residents and to promote the green transport revolution in the capital.”
The Kerem Tunnel first was excavated in the 1990s to create a main sewer line for the Gihon Corporation towards Sorek. It is now being used as an infrastructure Tunnel which includes the fifth waterline to Jerusalem via the Mekorot water corporation.

The current works include road construction, installation of blowers and advanced electrical and safety systems, to ensure the tunnel is safe for people to walk through all year round.
The Kerem Tunnel provides access to exclusive recreation spots, including Ein Kerem neighbourhood, the biblical aquarium and zoo as well as the natural springs of historical significance Ein Haniyeh, Ein Laban Ein Laban, and Ein Haniyeh.
