נווה פריצקי The Kerem Tunnel is the first bike tunnel to be constructed in Israel and was officially opened in the year 2000 as part of the Jerusalem Ring Path, a 42-kilometer cycle path that runs around the capital.

נווה פריצקי The 2.1-kilometer-long tunnel was inaugurated by Jerusalem’s Heritage Minister Zeev Elkin. It was also attended by Mayor Moshelion Avi Balehnikov, Gihon Water Company Chairman, and thousands of cyclists.

Elkin, whose ministry together with the Jerusalem Municipality spearheaded the project, explained that his ministry “invests hundreds of millions of shekels each year to develop the tourism industry in Jerusalem and also in the development of new tourist attractions and ventures that link the rich history of our capital city to its future… I would like to invite cyclists to ride a secure and modern-day route that takes you through Old Jerusalem.
נווה פריצקי Elkin’s Ministry Elkin’s Ministry, the Tourism Ministry, Jerusalem Municipality as well as the Gihon Corporation all contributed to the project. The Jerusalem Development Authority completed the work.
Elkin stressed that “The Kerem Tunnel Project is the central instrument to achieve the dream to transform the concept of transport in Jerusalem.” “The new tunnel connecting to Jerusalem Ring Path will join the existing bike paths as well as the ones that will be paved within its neighborhoods. It’s designed to promote biking within the city’s residents and to promote the green movement in the capital.”
The Kerem Tunnel, originally excavated by the Gihon Corporation in the 1990s in order to transfer its main sewer line towards the Sorek purification plant.

The work currently in progress includes road construction, the installation of blowers and advanced security and electrical systems to make the tunnel safe for the public to pass through throughout the year.
