As part of the 42-kilometer Jerusalem Ring Path cycling route, which surrounds the capital, the Kerem Tunnel was inaugurated.

The 2.1-kilometers-long tunnel project was inaugurated at a formal ceremony on Thursday , attended by Jerusalem and Heritage Minister Ze’ev Elkin, Mayor Moshe Lion, Gihon water company chairman Avi Baleshnikov, and a slew of cyclists.

Today, apart from its rich history it also has modern tourism,” Elkin said. “The launch of the tunnel project is a further part of the growth of Jerusalem’s city Jerusalem and its transformation into a desirable city that is attractive to all types of people in Israel and throughout the globe.”
Elkin the minister whose ministry as well as the Jerusalem Municipality led the project, said that his ministry “invests hundreds to millions of shekels annually in the development all aspects Jerusalem’s visitors and in the design and operation of new attractions, ventures , and other attractions that connect the glorious history of Jerusalem’s eternal city to its future”. The project was executed by the Jerusalem Development Authority.

The work currently in progress includes road construction, the installation of blowers as well as modern electrical and safety systems, to ensure the tunnel is safe for people to walk through at all times of the year.
The Kerem Tunnel also allows access to special recreation areas which include the Ein Kerem neighborhood, the biblical zoo and aquarium as well as the historic natural springs of Ein Laban and Ein Haniyeh.
