The Kerem Tunnel, the first cycle tunnel in Israel was opened as part of the Jerusalem Ring Path, a 42-kilometer cycling route that surrounds the capital city.

The 2.1-kilometer long tunnel was opened on Thursday by Jerusalem and heritage minister Ze’ev Elkin as well as Mayor Moshe Lion. Avi Baleshnikov of Gihon Chairman of Gihon, and hundreds other cyclists also attended.

The Kerem Tunnel was first excavated in the early 1990s in order to shift the main sewer line of the Gihon Corporation toward the purification plant located in Sorek The Sorek Tunnel is located west of the city and is used today as an infrastructure tunnel that also houses the fifth water line, which connects to Jerusalem from the Mekorot water company.
