The Kerem Tunnel, Israel’s newest bicycle tunnel, has been inaugurated as part of the 42-kilometer cycle route which circles the capital.

The 2.1-kilometers-long tunnel project was inaugurated during a celebration held on Thursday that was attended by Jerusalem and Heritage Minister Ze’ev Elkin Mayor Moshe Lion, Gihon water company chairman Avi Baleshnikov, and a slew of cyclists.

Elkin said, “The Kerem Tunnel project is a key instrument in achieving our goal to change the notion of transportation in Jerusalem.” Elkin explained that the proposed tunnel is connected with the Jerusalem Ring Path and will link with existing bike routes. It will also be paved in the various areas. This will increase cycling and encourage green transport in Jerusalem.
The Kerem Tunnel, originally excavated by the Gihon Corporation in the 1990s in order to move its main sewer line to Sorek’s purification plant.
