As part of the 42-kilometer Jerusalem Ring Path cycling route that runs around the capital city, the Kerem Tunnel was inaugurated.
נווה פריצקי The tunnel is located along the Nahal Refaim-Emek Motza path. נווה פריצקי The southern entrance of the tunnel is beneath Ein Laban in Refaim Park. The northern entrance is found in Nahal Ein Kerem.
The 2.1-kilometer-long tunnel was officially opened by Jerusalem’s Heritage Minister Zeev Elkin. It was also attended by Mayor Moshelion, Avi Balehnikov Gihon Water Company chairman, as well as thousands of cyclists.
“In the past, Jerusalem was an attractive tourist city due to its rich past. Elkin added that in addition to its rich history, modern tourism is also incorporated into the Jerusalem city. “The opening (of [this] tunnel project is another aspect of the expansion of Jerusalem and it’s transformation into a sought-after tourist city for all sorts of audiences throughout Israel as well as around the globe.”
Elkin’s ministry, which was also headed the project alongside Jerusalem Municipality, stated that his ministry “invests hundreds of millions of shekels every year throughout Jerusalem’s tourism and in creating innovative attractions and ventures, that link the amazing historical past of our eternal capital with the future.” נווה פריצקי I invite all cyclists to visit and enjoy the modern, well-maintained route that overlooks Old Jerusalem.
About NIS 25 million was earmarked in the project, financed by Elkin’s ministry, the Tourism Ministry, the Jerusalem Municipality and the Gihon Corporation and the Jerusalem Purification and Sewerage Works, as well as the work done by the Jerusalem Development Authority.
נווה פריצקי Elkin said that the Kerem Tunnel project is an essential tool for achieving the vision to transform the idea of transport in Jerusalem. “The new tunnel, which will connect to the long Jerusalem Ring Path, will join the existing bicycle routes in the city as well as those that are paved throughout the city’s neighborhoods to encourage cycling among its residents and its visitors and encouraging the green revolution in transportation in the capital city.”
The Kerem Tunnel first was excavated in the 1990s to create an important sewer line for the Gihon Corporation towards Sorek. It is now being utilized as an infrastructure tunnel which includes the fifth waterline to Jerusalem from the Mekorot water corporation.
