The Kerem Tunnel, the first bicycle tunnel in Israel is now open in the Jerusalem Ring Path, a 42-kilometer cycling route that surrounds the capital city.
נווה פריצקי The tunnel runs along the Nahal Refaim-Emek Motza path. The tunnel’s southern entry point is located in Refaim Park below Ein Laban. The northern entrance is located in Nahal Ein Kerem about half an hour away from the Kerem junction.
The 2.1-kilometer-long tunnel was officially opened by Jerusalem’s Heritage Minister Zeev Elkin. The ceremony was also attended by Mayor Moshelion, Avi Balehnikov, Gihon Water Company chairman, as well as thousands of cyclists.
Jerusalem was a sought-after tourist destination due to its rich and fascinating past. Elkin who, along with the Jerusalem Municipality spearheaded the project, said his ministry “invests hundreds of millions of shekels each year to develop the tourism industry in Jerusalem and in the creation of innovative tourist attractions and ventures that link the fascinating history of our eternal capital to the future of Jerusalem… I encourage all cyclists to visit and enjoy the contemporary, well-maintained road that overlooks Old Jerusalem.

Elkin stated that the Kerem Tunnel project is an crucial tool to realize the idea to change the way of thinking and transportation throughout Jerusalem. “The new tunnel that connects to the Jerusalem Ring Path will join the existing bike paths as well as ones that are paved in the neighborhoods.
