Since Sunday night Federico Fico Gutierrez had been the most solid choice for Colombia’s presidency. It’s not the first time that his name has appeared on an electoral ballot. In fact, he was the city’s mayor and councilor in Medellin. It was his first national vote. The Team for Colombia coalition won more than two million votes. The presidential campaign has just started. The question of whether Medellin’s former mayor can become the real counterweight against petrismo will be dependent on the alliances that he creates and the negotiations that he holds. While on the left there is only one leader, Gustavo Petro, on the right there is still one man that is headed for the presidential election until Fico – again, should he be able to reach an agreement – convinces him to step aside and offer him support. Rodolfo who ran as an independent remains in the race. Gutierrez must mention the accomplishments of former Bucaramanga mayor Bucaramanga and millionaire builder, Rodolfo Hernandez, if he intends to combat petrismo.
Gutierrez has plenty to negotiate before even considering names for his potential presidential formula. But Gutierrez does have the support of other candidates for the Team for Colombia leadership. This isn’t a small number. Two former mayors Enrique Penalosa(Bogota) and Alex Char (Barranquilla), are with him. David Barguil, the leader and the founder of the Conservative party, is with Aydee Zarazo, Aydee Lizarazo, a member of the Christian Party, who often is a spokesman for his church’s guidelines.
